Which stars are now in season, which are looking stale?
Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes you should simply burn all existing copies.
With the summer movie season more than half over, the stars in the Hollywood firmament already have begun to realign based not just on box office, but also on industry perception.
As of now, Ryan Reynolds, 32, takes the prize for most improved status. The comically inclined actor with some seriously chiseled abs used to be relegated to such B-level fare as Waiting and the remake of The Amityville Horror.
But after going quip for quip with Sandra Bullock in The Proposal and brightening the screen as wise-sassing assassin Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds is on a roll. As a result, he's a superhero times two, nabbing a Deadpool feature plus the role of the Green Lantern over Bradley Cooper of The Hangover and Justin Timberlake.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine- the game
The Marvel Universe and its various heroes and villains have featured in many game titles and this time around, it’s the slice-and-dice loving Wolverine that’s the centre of attention. X-Men Origins: Wolverine follows the recently released movie and while you might think this is another game that’s simply attempting to cash in on the movie’s popularity (if any), I can safely say this isn’t the case.

Movie Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Much as I went into The Fellowship of the Ring caring more about Peter Jackson and Ian McKellen than I ever could about JRR Tolkien, my interest in X-Men Origins: Wolverine stems from the involvement of Gavin Hood and Hugh Jackman, and not from the legacy of X-Men comic books. Having said that, I rather liked Singer’s X-Men, loved X2 and probably thought more of The Last Stand than most people, so I do have a context in which I have invested in Wolverine-slash-Logan before.
Have Gavin Hood and his collaborators fashioned a film that can make me invest again, or dare I hope it, even make me invest more?
The opening scene kept me guessing as to how successful the film would ultimately be. It serves as a super-quick introduction to Logan’s rage and guilt, which are given as some kind of inner drive for him and visualised in the form of a howling motif we will see again and again.
Warning! This review has spoilers at the end!

'Wolverine': Producer discusses Internet leak at premiere
Just days away from opening in thousands of theaters across the country, X-Men Origins: Wolverine continues to contend with lingering curiosity over the scandal that erupted last month when a bootleg copy of the film appeared online. At Wolverine's L.A. premiere on Tuesday night, producer Lauren Shuler Donner told EW that the person or people responsible for the leak still haven't been caught. "We may never figure out who did it, and that pisses me off," she said. "It's hard enough in this economy to get these types of films made, and if enough people bootleg and don't go to the theater, we won't be able to make these movies anymore." In the meantime, industry sages are focusing their energies on preventing future leaks of this magnitude. "I don't know how we protect ourselves," Shuler Donner said. "Studios are working on it, and 3D keeps getting mentioned because you can't download 3D. But I don't want to make every movie in 3D. We gotta figure something out because it will kill the industry if what happened to us starts happening to everybody."
If it's any consolation, I know many fans will still watch the final, big-screen version.

X-men Origins: Wolverine review
Have the reshoots and edits made Wolverine a better film? We find out...
When a film is in trouble, there are telltale warning signs before it's even been released. There are last minute reshoots of key scenes, re-recording of dialogue, and editing of established sequences. You'll often see no or late viewings to critics, too, and in Wolverine's case, one can even argue that the early leak of a working cut was a brilliant piece of guerrilla marketing and research.
So, the question is... where does that leave the film on release?
Let's be honest up front - it's not nearly as good as X-Men 2. And, before you panic, it's not nearly as bad as X-Men 3 - thank the Gods! But that leaves it sitting in difficult territory alongside the first film in the series, a good enough exploration of characters that we know and love, but lacking in the heart and soul that made the second film such a great piece of storytelling.
However, you can also see the film that it could have been, and I get the feeling that the re-shoots and last minute work have actually saved the film, rather than presaged a clawed and savage disaster.
We still think the movie's great!

Tempe welcomes A-list celebs at 'Wolverine' premiere
Roll out the red carpet -- Hollywood has come to the Valley.
Tempe Marketplace played host to Monday's world premiere of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," and the film's major stars stopped by to say 'hello' and sign autographs.
You can see a photo slideshow of the Hollywood stars in Tempe to the left.
"This is the first time I've been to Arizona and not gotten a speeding ticket, so, so far so good," said Ryan Reynolds, who plays a character called Dead Pool in the film.
Reynolds said he enjoyed the warm welcome from Valley residents.
"You get to see all these people. You don't get this in Los Angeles. You really get to actually spend time with the people here, and that's a beautiful thing," he said.
Hugh Jackman, the film's star, echoed the sentiment.

Optimism: That's the ticket for 'Wolverine' star Jackman
Every Friday that he's shooting a movie, Hugh Jackman comes to work with a bag full of lottery tickets.
He gives them to everyone who works on his movies: co-stars, camera crews, set hands, the people who cater the food. He doesn't play. Why would he? It's not like the guy needs more good fortune.
Just look at the past year. He hosted the Oscars — and saw ratings rise 13%. His likeness is going up at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. His handprints and footprints were cast in cement last week in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre. He's People's reigning Sexiest Man Alive.
And Friday, he opens the most expensive film of his career, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But Jackman knows that Hollywood fates can turn on a single flop. And this story had a rough trip on its way to the big screen.
First came reports of creative differences between director Gavin Hood and studio executives. Then, on March 31, an unfinished version of the film leaked online — the largest Hollywood piracy heist yet. No arrests have been made in the case.
So let's all go and watch this movie!

Jackman relishes angry 'Wolverine' role
Wolverine is getting serious.
When Hugh Jackman signed on to produce as well as star in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (opening May 1), it was a conscious decision to wrest the character from a franchise that had made Wolverine more touchy-feely than his comic-book roots.
"He's a dark guy, a badass who does some questionable things," Jackman says. "I felt like we really hadn't tapped into the anger that he has in the comic books."
He promises that this film, featuring Liev Schreiber and Ryan Reynolds as fellow mutants, will be darker than any previous one featuring Wolverine. Think The Dark Knight with cutlery.
Of course, that means tapping into Jackman's own anger. And that can be hard to find, says Wolverine producer Lauren Shuler Donner.
Here's another morsel just before the film's opening day.

First impressions - X-Men Origins: Wolverine
We've seen the new Wolverine film and we're pretty sure it's going to divide audiences. How does it compare to the rest of the series? The quality of the effects? The acting? The story? We've got the quick answers.
Okay, right off the bat - Wolverine is solid, if a little wonky around the sides. It's quite dark for the most part; plenty of killing going on - wars, battles and cameos by a few lesser known mutants. Anyone who has seen the leaked workprint are advised that the cinema version is obviously the superior version.
And if you think watching a leaked version of Wolverine swinging around on wires is a good way to judge its quality, then you don't realise what you're missing. This is first and foremost a film for fans of the series; newcomers to the series may feel a little alienated by the choppy plot and sub-characters.
How does it compare to the rest of the series?
Easily better than X-Men 3, but without the quality of subtext displayed in X-Men 1 and 2.
The fight scenes?
We really dug the fight choreography in this flick. There are some menacing, balls-to-the-wall fights between Wolverine and Sabretooth and at times it felt like the duelling cyborgs in James Cameron's T2.
Way cool! The downsides are few.

'Wolverine' bow delayed in Mexico
Hollywood went on high alert Monday for signs of whether swine flu might sicken the box office, with the spreading epidemic already curtailing moviegoing in Mexico.
For now, industryites are simply in a watch-and-wait mode following reports of swine flu outbreaks in New York and elsewhere in the U.S. Certainly nobody expects any major adverse affect on Fox's global bow of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" this weekend.
"There isn't any Stateside impact yet," Fox domestic distribution president Bruce Snyder said.
Internationally, only Mexico is an immediate problem. The market was further disrupted Monday by an earthquake near Mexico City.
Touted as a potential $100 million domestic grosser during its first three days, "Wolverine" unspools virtually day-and-date in 101 international territories, with only Japan, India and Japan set for later bows. The Marvel Studios-produced pic had been scheduled to bow this weekend in Mexico, but its release there has been postponed -- possibly to May 14, though the date hasn't been finalized.
So sorry for Wolverine fans in Mexico.

Comparing The Theatrical And Rough Cut Of X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Interesting details on how the two versions compare to one another. I for one will still be in the theater May 1.
AICN reports:
"Veritas sent in the following message after viewing the edit we'll be seeing in theaters, also including an aside about a conspiracy of silence surrounding advance screenings of the film.
Here's Veritas...
Sometimes there are clauses prohibiting us from writing about a movie before a certain date ("embargo"). But this was different: we had to sign a clause that we wouldn't even TALK about the movie until two days prior to its US release, especially on the web. I found that quite odd.
Add to that recent reports that the finished version is as long as the leaked workprint, even though FOX stubbornly insists that the workprint is missing the material from the reshoots. It makes sense, too, as the trailers have scenes that are not featured in the workprint (Wolverine carrying his girlfriend to the beach, a young Ororo in Nigeria).
Well, having seen the finished film, the mystery is solved: the workprint version IS in fact identical to the release print, sans effect and some audio work. It's obvious that FOX is trying their darndest to keep this news from getting out, because it will eliminate most of the motivation for people who have seen the workprint to pay for a ticket.
Some scenes from the trailer are not in the finished version, either.
Interesting comments. We'll see the movie when it opens in the theaters and judge for ourselves.

Synopsis for X-Men Origins: Wolverine
Warning! This synopsis contains spoilers
James Logan aka Wolverine and his brother Victor Creed (who will later become Sabretooth) run away together as children in the mid 1850's after Logan kills their biological father who had murdered Logan's adoptive father. After serving together in many wars they are recruited by William Stryker to serve in a special unit made up of mutants. After wiping out an African villiage, Logan quits the unit and goes off to live a life of peace in the Canadian Rockies with his girlfriend later to be known as the Silver Fox.
Six years pass for the both of them until Stryker shows up and asks Logan to come back and be a part of a new Weapon X project. Logan refuses but Creed shows up and murders Logan's girlfriend leaving him wanting revenge against his brother. Logan accepts Strykers offer to be infused with Adamantium so that he can be indestructable and go after his revenge but is double crossed by Stryker and hears him give the order to wipe his memories. Escaping before this can happen, he goes searching for Creed killing anyone who gets in his way.
After reuniting with a few members of his old team, he finds out that Stryker and Creed are actually working together to kidnap mutants and keep them in confinement working on a new project, Weapon XI and that only one person knows where their new base of operations is. Remy LeBeau aka Gambit is the only mutant to escape this place and Logan along with John Wraith go searching for him in New Orleans. They find him in a card game where Logan tries to question him but with less than desireable results. After being blasted through a wall by Gambit, Logan sees Creed standing over the dead body of Wraith and the fight is on. Right when Logan is about to get his revenge and kill Creed, Gambit comes flying in with his staff and blows everyone apart. Creed uses this distraction to escape while Logan and Gambit go at it. After showing Gambit the light (with his claws), Gambit agrees to take Logan to Three Mile Island where the facility is hidden.
We decided to feature this for those looking for a plot summary. We repeat the warning: this contains spoilers!

It's out in less than a week, but in case you're not already champing at the bit to see everyone's favourite big-haired berserker in action here's a taster from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, showing the man himself experiencing rather a disturbing nightmare.
As you probably already know, that's Lynn Collins in the clip as Silver Fox, the girlfriend that Wolverine finds when he abandons his fightin' ways and goes off to seek peace and inner oneness (probably not) in a cabin on a hilltop.
One last tidbit before opening day!

Hugh Jackman Talks Up ‘Sense Of Occasion’ Surrounding ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ Premiere
Hugh Jackman booked Tempe, Arizona, into his travel plans this week when the city won its very own “Wolverine” premiere, which is set to take place on Monday. Amid all of the last-minute scenes from the film being released and lingering chatter about the leaked version of the film last month, Jackman sounds pretty content to travel down to California’s neighboring state and hobnob with comics fans.
“They are very passionate,” Jackman told AZCentral.com. “And they tell me exactly what they think — what they like and what they don’t like.”
And Jackman seems to be taking to the role of comic book geek ambassador to the general public these days, between his fanboy praises and recorded message inviting non-comic book buyers to show up at their local shops for Free Comic Book Day and give the medium a try.
Okay, all roads lead to Tempe on Monday. Worth it to see Hugh Jackman in the flesh.

Wolverine Cast Talks Piracy, On-Set Stabbings
Piracy and actual spilled blood have marked the rough road to the big screen for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. So it's understandable that cast and crew members at Saturday's press conference on the 20th Century Fox lot were both excited and relieved about the movie's looming release.
"It was a huge shock for all of us when someone stole the movie," said director Gavin Hood, referring to last month's online leak of an unfinished work print of Wolverine. "It's like reaching out to you guys and grabbing your (reporter's) notebooks and saying, 'I'm going to publish whatever you've written, right now. I know you're not done, but we'll just shove it out there and see what people think of your work.'"
Hood said he was "crushed" by the illegal online preview of the film, which tells the back story of Wolverine, a mutant with superhuman strength, amazing healing powers and indestructible metal claws. But Hood admitted he will be relieved to see the finished version arrive in theaters Friday.
"Any piece of work is molded and shaped until you feel ready to offer it to the public, knowing that you will be judged on that work," he said. "I'm thrilled that it's finally out there in the form that we wanted -- on a big screen."
We didn't take a peek at the online preview of the film, did you?

Hugh Jackman's 'Wolverine' claws his way to the top of the blockbuster series
Hugh Jackman has done it all - almost.
He's hosted the Oscars, danced on Broadway, flashed his winning grin and flexed his acting muscles, but Friday is the first time the Australian actor will claw his way into movie theaters as the main attraction.
In "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," there's no Halle Berry or Nicole Kidman by his side to buoy the box office. This time it's just Jackman, his claws and a heap of Hollywood expectations to the tune of $150 million.
That's what it cost to make the film, which tracks the origins of Jackman's Marvel comics character, a hairy, muscled hunk with adamantium claws that sprout from between his knuckles. Wolverine can recover from injuries more quickly than Clark Kent can take off his glasses. Hopefully, Jackman won't need that power.
"In terms of how I feel, I'm excited about it," says Jackman, 40. "Once I saw the movie, I was really jazzed by that. I've laid everything else into the hands of the box office gods."
Jackman is also a producer on the movie - it's the second project from the production company he founded with his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, and business partner John Palermo. He lobbied for the flick to be shot in Australia and New Zealand, making it the first "X-Men" title filmed in those countries, and calls the movie "my baby."

Look sharp! It's Hugh Jackman as 'Wolverine'
Ask Hugh Jackman the biggest challenge of revisiting the role of Wolverine for the fourth time, and he'll tell you it has nothing to do with playing that character.
Oh no, ''that was the easy part,'' said the amiable Aussie with one of his famous winks, sipping a glass of ''plain old agua de tap'' water in a quiet corner of the bar of the Peninsula Hotel. ''The added pressure here was that for the first time I was both the lead actor and a producer. It was wearing that producer hat that added so much extra pressure. Yet, in a weird way, it made the pressure less on me as an actor, if that makes any sense.''
Jackman explained that being a producer, ''you're involved so intimately in every aspect of the development of the film. So, by the time you get ready to shoot a scene, it's totally different. ... As an actor, it's more of just showing up, knowing your lines and all that.
''But as a producer, I had been to all the auditions. I had fought for that actor or fought against casting another one. I'd seen all the sketches for the costumes. I had seen the drawings of what the set would look like. I'd seen eight drafts of the script. ... As an actor, you're just all about being a big kid. Being a producer, it's all about being a grown-up.
''And that's not always comfortable for me,'' said Jackman, letting out a whoop of a guffaw and sounding, well, just like a big kid.
Hugh Jackman the producer succeeds in making Wolverine go darker. Nice article.

Wolverine and the X-Men: Heroes Return Trilogy DVD Review
Wolverine must reunite the X-Men to prevent a horrible vision of the future…In the late 20th century, mankind began to change. Suddenly, teenagers developed incredible abilities that science classified as the next stage in human evolution. In response, Professor Charles Xavier created The Institute for Gifted Youngsters so the young “mutants” could learn to control their uncanny abilities and live in harmony with the non-mutant members of society. From then on, Xavier’s students — the X-Men — intervened to protect the peace until a mysterious explosion devastated Xavier’s school. Leaderless and without direction, the X- Men disbanded and the man known as Wolverine struck out on his own. One year later, the once fiercely independent Wolverine must reunite the X-Men to prevent a horrible vision of the future where the X-Men have given up on Xavier’s mission and the world has fallen into chaos. With great tragedy in their past and their future, Wolverine must lead Xavier’s disillusioned heroes against the forces of fate and destiny. Only together can the X-Men steer the course of history away from catastrophe and save us all.

Hugh Jackman thrilled about "X-Men Origins: Wolverine"
Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman revealed that he is thrilled about his forthcoming flick ˜X-Men Origins: Wolverine".
Hugh, who plays Wolverine in the upcoming flick, has also produced the flick with wife Deboraa-Lee-Furness and pal John Palermo.
‘I am excited. There have been a lot of wild twists and turns in my life over the past six months that have been really exciting for me,’ the Daily Telegraph quoted Jackman, as saying.
‘For our company it’s obviously a big, big film and we are putting our names on there as producers so you live or die by the sword,’ he added.
The actor revealed that cold showers, listening to Metallica and Godsmack, and shooting the flick at 4am helped him connect with his ultra-furious character.
Take it from the man himself. We are all equally thrilled.

90's X-Men Cartoons Revisited
With Wolverine right around the corner Fox has released some classic cartoons that you've gotta see. And if you've already seen them, like so many of our readers have, you'll want to see them again.
For the first time ever, all 32 episodes of the 90’s cartoon Marvel X-Men TV-series will be available on DVD! The two volume set will be hitting the shelves April 28th, but you can catch a glimpse with these clips...
I like the Wolverine vs. Morph (Vol. 1) clip the best. Try watching all four clips at the same time for more fun.

Wolverine and the X-Men: Heroes Return Trilogy
Typically, I condemn studios for releasing "episodic samplers" of a television series in lieu of an entire season box set. It's a lousy practice designed with nothing more than money grubbing in mind. The Wolverine and the X-Men: Heroes Return Trilogy, if tradition holds true, should receive similar reproach. But it doesn't; at least not entirely. It turns out people like me are the exact intended audience of this set. Yes, I still somewhat resent Lionsgate for putting out a one disc release that represents a mere fraction of the entire season - but it brought a superb series to my attention and really, isn't that the point?
Wolverine and the X-Men possesses a mythology depth that rivals and ultimately bests the 90s X-Men animated series and an updated animation style that borrows yet improves upon the X-Men: Evolution series of a few years back. Wolverine and the X-Men is the comic book animated series we've all been waiting for. Virtually everything is improved upon - everything.
Also released earlier this week is this Wolverine DVD. Can't wait to get one.

The movie will be shown not only at the Cine Capri, but in all of Harkins' 16 theatres at the Tempe Marketplace, said Dan Harkins, chief executive officer of Harkins Theatres. The complex has more than 3,000 seats.
"Tickets to the world premiere will be free," Harkins said. "There will be no charge at all. You just have to find a way to get your hands on a ticket to the world premiere."

UPDATED: Top 10 Cities Announced In ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ Screening Competition
The United States is in the midst of a brutal civil war. No, there aren’t any blue- or grey-clad soldiers running around with bayonets and muskets, and we’re not talking about Captain America and Iron Man, either — but we are talking superheroes. Right now, Americans are waging Internet warfare to win over the affections of Wolverine.
Earlier this month, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” star Hugh Jackman declared in a special video statement that the American city with the most votes on the film’s official website would host an advance screening of the mutant-filled feature. The screening would even include guest appearances from the movie’s mutant stars. Now, as the voting deadline draws near, 10 cities have been identified as the leading candidates for the film debut.
As of April 8th, 2009, the Lone Star State of Texas is the leading territory in the competition with three cities — Austin, Dallas and San Antonio — sitting high in the Top 10. Neighboring Las Vegas, Nevada and Tempe, Arizona are not far behind.
This was early this week's standings - at least we know which cities are in the running.

Bring Wolverine and His Mutant Friends to Your Town!
As marketing ploys go, this one for the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie is pretty good. If you click here, you can enter a contest to bring the movie's world premiere to your town — and yes, the premiere includes Mr. Hugh Jackman himself! Cool, right? If you don't want to submit a specific town you can just vote for the town you want to win. The place with the biggest "X" (i.e. most votes) come April 17 will win, and the big winner will be announced April 20.
Too late for those who still want to vote, this is just a heads up for next week's announcement- and a small treat for those who can't watch enough videos of Hugh Jackman.

Wolverine Character Videos... Well, They're Kind of Hot
For a movie like X-Men Origins: Wolverine, these brief little videos in which the characters speak directly to camera about themselves is way more intriguing to me than an ordinary old trailer. In the trailers we get glimpses of these guys, and of course there's more of an emphasis on Wolverine and Sabretooth, but with individual videos we can actually take a good look at Gambit, Wraith and Deadpool (speaking of whom, Ryan Reynolds, all that working out seriously paid off).
Yes, this is a fresh twist to the traditional trailer - see for yourself.

Wolverine Still Tracking High Despite Early Internet Leak?
The internet leak of X-Men Origins: Wolverine might not be as detrimental as 20th Century Fox first feared. An early print of the film has now been downloaded over 1,000,000 times (TorrentFreak, thanks to downbeat), and who knows how many people have watched those downloads or copies of those downloads distributed to friends/family.
Based on TF’s numbers, a conservative estimate would be that 2 million people have watched the illegally downloaded film, which is the box office equivalent of $15-$20 million. Download numbers aside, the big concern was that the unfinished workprint might cause a wave of bad word of mouth that would detour the usual suspects from showing up opening weekend.
But Entertainment Weekly is reporting that the consumer research tracking statistics show “a high ‘wanna see’ rating for the film, which is said to be the No. 1 choice for young men and guys aged 31 and older,” the key demographics required for a monster opening weekend. But EW also claims that the film has only been downloaded “by more than 100,000 users”, so who knows the accuracy of these tracking numbers.
Wolverine on the big screen is still something to watch!
