Ask Hugh Jackman the biggest challenge of revisiting the role of Wolverine for the fourth time, and he'll tell you it has nothing to do with playing that character.
Oh no, ''that was the easy part,'' said the amiable Aussie with one of his famous winks, sipping a glass of ''plain old agua de tap'' water in a quiet corner of the bar of the Peninsula Hotel. ''The added pressure here was that for the first time I was both the lead actor and a producer. It was wearing that producer hat that added so much extra pressure. Yet, in a weird way, it made the pressure less on me as an actor, if that makes any sense.''
Jackman explained that being a producer, ''you're involved so intimately in every aspect of the development of the film. So, by the time you get ready to shoot a scene, it's totally different. ... As an actor, it's more of just showing up, knowing your lines and all that.
''But as a producer, I had been to all the auditions. I had fought for that actor or fought against casting another one. I'd seen all the sketches for the costumes. I had seen the drawings of what the set would look like. I'd seen eight drafts of the script. ... As an actor, you're just all about being a big kid. Being a producer, it's all about being a grown-up.
''And that's not always comfortable for me,'' said Jackman, letting out a whoop of a guffaw and sounding, well, just like a big kid.
Hugh Jackman the producer succeeds in making Wolverine go darker. Nice article.
